O God, If they allow FIA and ISI to work in US against us, where would our freedoms go. We are US citizens and have chosen this as our country to get away from these bribes and harassment and injustice. We will never let this happen.--- Philadelphia

What non-sensical idea. This is meant only to send some blue-eyed officers at great foreign exchange cost to the country. What can they do in a free country like America, If they chase any Pakistani-American, soon the spy wuld either be behind the bars or sent back home disgraced or facing a million dollar law suit. America is a free country and not a military dictatorship. So get lost 007s, you are not needed here.

There are always two sides of any story. I do not know as to why every Pakistani whether living in or out of Pakistan is always biased, prejudiced or suspicious of every act of government or any state institutions, without going into the merits or demerits of those actions. I am definitely not propagating in the favour of government or the FIA but I do not see any fishy thing in this proposal. This proposal is not a new one. The Link Officers had earlier been posted in the Pakistani Missions abroad as mentioned in the letter which were disbanded out of political expediencies and not for their in-effectiveness or any corrupt practices. Almost every country had been making such appointments in their foreign missions and these appointments are not in any way deterimental to the liberties of their citizens living in respective countries. The Pakistanis living in USA are perhaps more sensitive to their 'freedom' but they ignore the fact that USA is the only country who has the largest number of agents posted in foreign countrys. Does that mean that those agents are spying on the US citizens living abroad. What I am trying to clarify is that these kind of appointments are always in the interest of the country in view of the ever changing geo-political developments. One should not presume, without any solid evidence, that the officers so posted would indulge in corrupt practices and that they would be spying on fellow Pakistanis.

I read read about the South Asia Tribune (SAT) in 28-Aug-02 edition of The News, Karachi. I got very excited and visited the web site first thing today to view and read the "exciting" new journal. But, sad to say, South Asia Tribune has turned out to be just another Paki bashing Paki journal concieved by an ungrateful Paki, Mr Shaheen Sehbai.
You say "The warning signs are there again. America must invest its political and financial capital in institutions, not individuals. The American people and their elected representatives must not look the other way again. Freedom of the press is under siege. The promised return of democracy is being systematically compromised. American aid is being used to achieve dubious objectives. And the poor people of Pakistan, in defense of whom the ISI and General Musharraf have made their last stand, may once again lose whatever is left of a country that can still be great."
But to quote Mr Ardeshir Cowasjee, one of the most fearless and respected journalists in the history of Pakistan "It can be said, without any fear of contradiction, that the press has never been as free as it has been under the military government of President General Pervez Musharraf."

Actions speak louder then words, and the current 'actions' of this fauji government indicate that they're not going to tolerate any dissent from any quarters be it press or the politicians.... I can't wait for the elected governments and then the looks on Mush's face when he figures out that he's been had! Politicians, specially of the Pakistani flavor are the most unwieldy bunch the prez is daydreaming if he thinks he can control them!

You are right Haider taht "One should not presume, without any solid evidence, that the officers so posted would indulge in corrupt practices and that they would be spying on fellow Pakistanis"
You want to know "why every Pakistani whether living in or out of Pakistan is always biased, prejudiced or suspicious of every act of government or any state institutions" ? It is because of their everyday experiences about goverment agencies. Especially about LAW ENFORCEMENT agencies, who breaks the law most.
Even foreign missions abroad often(not always) feel Pakistani citizens, that they are not their friends, but foes.
As you mentioned, many countries had been making such appointments in their foreign missions, but thing is whether they are necessary for us? Were their past appointment was benefitial to country? These (& many more) questions should be answered before approval, because these link officers would cost the country quite high.

Another point is the places (countries) of such appointment. I wonder why Japan is included in the list. As contrary to USA & UK, Japan is not the heaven of refused politicians or crimnal refugees. The no of Pakistanis here is very small, in comparison to USA & UK, & immigration rules are very tight here. Living here is also quite costly, so it is not favoured place for any person who does not have a financial base (business) here.
There is need to make embassy costs down, not to increase by putting spy(ies) here. If the operational costs are increased, normally burden on overseas Pakistanis increase (in the form passport fees etc).

So before any decesion, plus & minus of the act should be discussed, preferably in the assembly.
