Why are key assets going to those sponsored by FM Shaukat Aziz?

Special SAT Report

ISLAMABAD: The pattern has been established. Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz has identified the key assets of Pakistan --- banks, telecom monopolies, oil refineries, to be privatized to Middle Eastern Groups he sponsors. Last week he delivered the United Bank to the Sheikhs of Abu Dhabi, although they were defaulters. He has promised the Hariri Group of Lebanon Pakistan's huge Telecom monopoly. The Saudis he invited, just missed bagging Habib Bank, a huge construction project and an oil refinery. Will he still continue to use his skills after the October elections to benefit his friends?

When the Economic Managers were caught cheating, red handed

Special SAT Report

ISLAMABAD: The economic managers of Pakistan have been using all their tricks and gimmickry to show a fake picture of the economy. In one case, when the Stock Exchange was sinking, they ordered government controlled financial institutions to pump in people's money into the Stock Exchange, without caring for the losses. The result was hundreds of millions of rupees, gone in a volatile and unpredictable capital market. Those who objected were brushed aside. Read the documents confirming how all this was managed, without success.

Musharraf's US visit is critical

Dear Readers:

Pakistan’s General Pervez Musharraf has begun his visit to the US on a very disheartening note, both from the Pakistanis and from the Bush Administration. He landed in Boston on Saturday and faced his first demonstration on Sunday by Pakistanis when he drove to speak at the Kennedy School. The same day President Bush’s National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice made a statement which Musharraf definitely did not like. SA Tribune will be covering the Musharraf visit in detail with inside stories, highlights, sidelights and juicy bits. Please click the Update Box to get the latest. In other stories this week, we deal with special deals Musharraf’s Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz has in store for his Middle Eastern friends. We also produce some documents on how the Stock Exchange was manipulated by Aziz, using small depositors’ money. Another big scoop is the official disclosure that thousands of Pakistani passports were missing in key suspected stations of Jeddah and Dubai. What will be the repercussions of this disclosure on the US War against Terror. Who used these passports? What happens if any terrorist is caught with a stolen Pakistani passport? And we have received more documents on the land grabbing story, showing how the Pakistan Army is keeping and managing grabbed lands. Take care.

While the story of land grabbing by Generals still reverberates around the country, with a case filed in the Lahore High Court taking it to another level, SA Tribune has now found evidence of how the army is mismanaging its "occupied" lands in prime sectors of major cities. Billions have been lost because of this mismanagement, now officially detected and confirmed.

How spooks threaten Islamabad

Islamabad is the show piece Capital of Pakistan, well preserved and well maintained. But the real threat is now coming from those very guardians of the City who now have nothing to do after the debacles in neighboring countries. Read how they want to breathe on top of every Islamabad resident, practically destroying what is known as the City's beauty..

Has anyone counted how many Pakistani officials and diplomats, civilian and in uniform, refused to return to Pakistan after completing their posting in US? A quick count popped up embarrassing numbers. SA Tribune decided to get a full count with all the names and how these people are doing now.

The present Government claims it has nothing to do with corporate and business corruption. Yet senior most officials have been directly involved in the corruption that was rampant in the past. SA Tribune brings the story of one such high official who gave the sugar lobby much more than it demanded, but at what price to the tax payers.

Car manufacturing in Pakistan is a certified fraud. Influential groups, with the right links and connections, have obtained car making licenses under the garb of manfacturing. In fact these companies provide a big cover for imports, which are otherwise banned. Now thesegreedy car makers have been joined by the military government to rip the people off their money. A huge scandal in the making.

Billions swallowed by tycoons

The country's business community has gobbled up billions upon billions in bad loans but the Musharraf Government is content with only persecuting the politicians because they represent a threat to the regime. SA Tribune has got the lists of all defaulting companies of just one financial institution and the total adds up to over Rs 16 Billion (US$ 275 million). Read the lists.
