October Polls become uncertain as Nawaz, Benazir join hands

By Abdullah F. Khan

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: In a major political coup late last week, two former prime ministers of Pakistan launched a joint strategy to remove General Musharraf, called each other 'brother and sister' on telephone and announced extended electoral cooperation. Their surprise move caused immediate panic in the Musharraf camp as fears of postponement of the polls multiplied. The election scene in Pakistan was electrified as Nawaz withdrew in favour of Benazir and PPP promised to let Shahbaz Sharif and Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz an easy ride in the poll. The developments could cause clamping down of Martial Law in Pakistan in the name of security and threats from India and terrorism.

The battle for freedom must go on

Dear Readers: Producing the SA Tribune is be- coming exciting by the week as our readership multiplied 10 times in just 31 days of August, from 65,000 hits in July to over 600,000. These steamy days of August also saw a fierce retaliatory campaign against my cousins in Pakistan, matched by an ferocious condemnation by the Pakistani and the world journalistic and human rights bodies, topped by a demo in front of the Karachi Press Club last Saturday. I must thank everybody for the extra-ordinary support, particularly my friends and colleagues who provided moral, physical and legal assistance to meet the threat. The battle is still on, and will go on.
This week we were just winding up the issue when news of the grand political alliance between Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto broke, followed by a cordial “Thank You” phone call to NS by BB from London. This development could mean a lot of good, as well as bad things for Pakistan, as our report suggests. The first casualty could be the October polls itself. But Musharraf is certainly a casualty which cannot be avoided. Exactly the same conclusion has been reached by Arnaud de Borchgrave, a veteran US journalist who has disclosed that Musharraf had already faced six attempts and the 7th may not be far away.
I must thank readers for the superb response to the Generals Land Grabbing story. One response came from a retired Colonel and we are giving him the right to respond. His response, however, is amusing as he offered me to sell some acres of land in Bahawalpur. Thank You Colonel, we already have enough men lined up in uniform to perform that grabbing task.
Take Care
