Special SAT Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been forced to spend millions of dollars in rush-rush deals to put its own space satellite in orbit, a used, short-life temporary one for the moment, because this matter was not handled properly in the past. Contracts under pressure have been signed and no insurance cover is available to Pakistan if the satellite is lost.

The poor, powerless consumers of power, electric power, have to pay ever-increasing rates no matter if the company they are paying is making huge profits or running into losses. This report gives all the documents to show how mismanagement is causing costs to rise which are quietly and without any qualms, passed on to the consumers, who have to pay, through their nose at times.

Has anyone counted how many Pakistani officials and diplomats, civilian and in uniform, refused to return to Pakistan after completing their posting in US? A quick count popped up embarrassing numbers. SA Tribune decided to get a full count with all the names and how these people are doing now.

The present Government claims it has nothing to do with corporate and business corruption. Yet senior most officials have been directly involved in the corruption that was rampant in the past. SA Tribune brings the story of one such high official who gave the sugar lobby much more than it demanded, but at what price to the tax payers.

Car manufacturing in Pakistan is a certified fraud. Influential groups, with the right links and connections, have obtained car making licenses under the garb of manufacturing. In fact these companies provide a big cover for imports, which are otherwise banned. Now these greedy car makers have been joined by the military government to rip the people off their money. A huge scandal in the making.

Gearing up for major Legal Battle

Dear Readers:

After desperate day and night efforts, the military Government of General Musharraf seems to be close to have hammered out a coalition of its supporters and caused a breach in the solid PPP block of Benazir Bhutto.

But all this horse trading and deal-making goes against the stated ideals of General Musharraf and it would be interesting to see how he justifies all this while condemning similar activities of these very parties in the past as “sham democracy.”
Breaking up of political parties by using State power, political bribes and the stick of accountability is a dirty game which has been played by many in the past. General Musharraf has become part of the same dirty past although when he started in 1999 he appeared to be above it and condemned it strongly.

Last week his Cabinet took a major decision to start legal proceedings in the US against newspapers and websites critical of his government, specially the South Asia Tribune. We are gearing up for any legal challenge and we will be depending on support of everybody and anybody, anywhere in this major battle. We are confident that we will win it hands down. We will not allow a military dictator to re-write the rules for the Internet. Gen. Musharraf will spend the millions which belong to the poor people of Pakistan. We will count on the millions of our supporters and readers world wide.

Take Care,
Shaheen Sehbai
