Tough Times Ahead for the Media Dear Readers: Pakistan stays on a rough course as India too entered troubled waters with a huge right wing BJP victory in Gujarat, promising more Hindu and Muslim massacres. The Pakistani situation is confusing as both the military and the incoming politicians are suspicious of each other and are trying to consolidate their respective positions, in whatever safe way they can. The Army is brazen in its moves, over confident probably. But the saddest part is that General Musharraf is acting like he will never have to face any question about his conduct, ever. Last week he ordered burning of all Referendum records, an act equal to declaring himself guilty and rendering his claim to the highest office in the country totally baseless. If the Referendum was a fraud and its record has to be put to fire, how can its off shoot be legitimate. But both the media and the politicians have to show patience in the face of brute gun power that Musharraf and his men wield. Prime Minister Jamali has his feet on the ground and his mind in its place. So hopes can still be pinned as politicians have yet to settle down, Parliament has to be completed, roles assigned and people have to start working on their agendas. The developments in India do not augur well for Pakistan or Muslims in general. The huge extremist Hindutva victory will encourage Vajpayee and now this card will be played all over India. Expect many Hindu and Muslim massacres in the coming months. Tough times for the media to play an objective independent role. Yet we will try. Take Care
